Honoring Dr. Lavinia Ekong

Dr. Lavinia Ekong

Dr. Lavinia Ekong (1961–2019) was a beloved member of the IRTM community, a gifted psychologist and Imago therapist, and a visionary leader whose contributions continue to inspire our work.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Lavinia was the youngest of seven siblings and brought a sense of connection, generosity, and love of community into every aspect of her life. She earned her Master of Social Work from Wayne State University and her Doctorate in Psychology from Michigan School of Psychology. As a licensed psychologist and Imago relationship therapist, she spent more than three decades helping individuals and couples build healthier, more connected relationships through her private practice, workshops, teaching, and presentations.

As a beloved IRTM Board Member, Lavinia embodied the heart of our Imago approach. She was dynamic, innovative, and deeply committed to the transformative power of Imago. Her warmth, wisdom, infectious laugh, and generous spirit made others feel seen, welcomed, and valued.

Lavinia shared a beautiful marriage with her beloved husband, Sam Ekong, and together they modeled the respect and deep connection that she so passionately helped others create in their own lives.

Those who knew Lavinia remember her radiant smile, strength, joyful presence, and wholehearted love for people. Her professional legacy lives on through the therapists she inspired, the relationships she helped to strengthen, and the many lives she touched.

The Dr. Lavinia Ekong Fellowship honors her enduring commitment to community, diversity and inclusion, professional excellence, and the belief that healing relationships can change the world.
